The National Theatre is proud to announce a week-long Folk Music School in March 2012.
The School is aimed at singer/musicians seeking a future in the performing arts and will offer
an immersion into vernacular culture through folk-song, with speci c reference to the style of
music and song which inspired the show, War Horse.
The School will run from Monday 19 to Friday 23 March 2012 at the National Theatre Studio
in London.
The School will feature group sessions, masterclasses and one-to-one teaching.
Principal mentors will include:
Nancy Kerr ( ddle and voice)
John Kirkpatrick (melodeon, button accordion, concertina and voice)
Chris Parkinson (piano accordion and harmonica)
Adrian Sutton (composer of the original score for War Horse)
John Tams (Songmaker for War Horse)
Visiting tutors will include:
Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris (Directors of War Horse)
Michael Morpurgo (Author of War Horse)
Interested musicians can apply by sending in two songs showcasing their work, accompanied by a supporting
statement addressing their musical development to date. Music will be accepted on any of the current
transferable formats. Priority will be given to accordion/voice and ddle/voice. Other instruments will be welcomed,
notably melodeon, concertina and viola. Non-readers will be considered. Fretted instruments are not part of this
rst initiative.
Successful candidates will receive a contribution towards travel, accommodation as necessary
and a daily fee of £70.

Let's Hear it for Island Bands!
All our favourite island folk bands are playing throughout the year including regular gigs from Last Orders (Irish), The Crew (English), Grizzled Skipper (Various), Scarecrow (Various), JC and Angelina (Roots), Pete's Sake (Various), Tzigane (Gypsy) and The Chale Wailers (Americana). They can be seen playing in pubs on the island including The Bargeman's Rest at Newport Quay, The Stag, The Spyglass Inn at Ventnor sea front, The Steamer Inn on Shanklin sea front, The Dairyman's Daughter at Arreton and The Woodvale at Gurnard sea front.
